As a graduate of this course, you will be qualified to work in both the disability support and aged care sectors. These sectors are much in demand, as there is a growing deficit of aged care workers and moreover the Australian Government has planned a more united approach to disability support in the country.

Enrolling in this qualification and availing the relevant state funding, may affect student's future training options and the eligibility for further government subsidised training.

Students eligible and opting for government funding must attend 20 hours of classroom sessions per week. Students failing to attend the classroom sessions will not be able to avail the funding and will be required to pay the full course fees.

The CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support is nationally accredited and is suited to workers in the community and/or residential setting who provide aid to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

The classroom mode of the course will be delivered over a maximum of 40 weeks. Blended mode completion times will vary. There will be a practical placement component totalling 120 hours for both modes. There are two modes of delivery - a classroom or a blended learning approach.

Online (Blended) [A New Experience in Learning]

  • Simulation-based training and assessment at campus
  • Clinical placement, at approved healthcare facilities across Australia
Notice: Please note that students who are studying in our Melbourne Campus will have to attend mandatory weekly one day class on every Saturday starting from 8th July 2017. Class timing will be 9 am to 5 pm.

After successful completion of the program, the candidates may gain employment in aged care service centers, disability support centers, residential group homes, training resource centers, day respite centers and open employment services, other community settings and clients' homes.

IHNA has in place admission criteria for courses in its scope as required by its ‘Application and Enrolment Procedure for VET Courses’ to ensure that candidates meet industry requirements.

•   Applicants are required to be 18 years old and above and need to be Secondary School year 10 pass,
OR
•   Be of mature age which can be demonstrated by a candidate who is at least of 21 years and has at least 2 years industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication

In addition, all the applicants are required to have successfully completed an ACSF test and demonstrate competence as working at Level 3 for all indicators to enroll for this qualification (issued within the last 12 months from the time of admission).

Additional Requirement for professional experience placement (PEP).
•   A satisfactory National Police Clearance / Australian Federal Police Clearance Certificate(AFP) / NCC will be required for placements.
•   IHNA highly recommends students to complete the immunisation process before the Professional Experience Placement start date as some facilities will not provide placement to student without immunisation.

It is also essential for the student to possess basic computer skills.

Physical requirements

While IHNA will work with you to make "reasonable accommodations" in the campus lab and classroom, there are work place practice conditions that occur in the workplace environment that are beyond IHNA's control. The physical requirements below are necessary to function in the healthcare facility and/or community setting. Students must be able to perform and complete course objectives and requirements with or without reasonable accommodations otherwise you will not be enrolled.

Skills and abilities that are needed to perform client care to pass the course objectives and requirements are:

Strength: Sufficient to assist with lifting and transferring a client, and perform CPR
Mobility: Sufficient mobility to bend, stoop, and bend down to the floor; ability to move around rapidly; and to move in small, confined areas.
Hearing: Sufficient to hear through the stethoscope to discriminate sounds; to hear cries for help; to hear alarms on equipment and emergency signals; and various overhead pages.
Vision: Sufficient to make physical assessments of client and equipment.
Communication: Able to communicate in both verbal and written formats; and interact with clients, staff, and faculty supervisors.
